‘Your local neighborhood watering hole’: Capitol Corner Bar set to open later this month

A new bar is setting up shop in the former Gas Lantern Drinking Company, located at 701 W Fulton St, in Boise.

Capitol Corner Bar hopes to be an affordable neighborhood watering hole within walking distance of Boise State University and downtown Boise.

The building is owned by Chris and Tove Nelson, the team behind TableRock Brewpub and Grill, a popular Boise pub and grill that operated in the same building for 23 years before closing in May of 2014.

BoiseDev spoke to Capitol Corner Bar Manager, Carissa Crosswhite, about the new bar.

“We want to be your local neighborhood watering hole. Some place close that college kids can actually afford,” Crosswhite said. “We are just a 10-minute walk from BSU, and that’s a great opportunity for the students who aren’t big beer connoisseurs and don’t want to just go to White Dog and have only beer.”

Crosswhite tells BoiseDev that the bar will offer cocktails, wine, and beer, along with seasonal cocktails that rotate.

“There will be some cocktails, but it’s not going to be that fancy. Just your basic bar cocktails,” Crosswhite said. “As far as I can remember, our standard well drinks are at one of the lowest costs in Boise, at only $6.”

Capitol Corner Bar will feature 8 wines on tap, four rotating drafts (with plans to add more), along with a full bar and an assortment of canned and bottled beers.

Happy Hour will be every day from 4 to 6 p.m. with $1 off well drinks, draft beers, and house wines.

The bar will not serve food, but Crosswhite said that they do have a popcorn machine from the original TableRock Brewpub that they are looking into putting back into service.

As for the interior, not much will change.

“Gas Lantern did an absolutely beautiful job, so all of that is going to stay. We have two TVs that will be playing sports, which I think is also nice for the BSU students to have somewhere to watch a game,” Crosswhite said. “We only have two TVs right now, but the plan is to get about two or three more in there. And while we won’t necessarily be a sports bar, it’ll be nice to offer sports for people that want to come in.”

The bar will also have free-to-play games, including a pool table, a foosball table, and darts.

The patio will also be set up with tables and chairs so patrons can enjoy their drinks while watching the hustle and bustle of Capitol Boulevard.

“We want to be a relaxed atmosphere where people can sit down and enjoy (their drinks) and not break the bank,” Crosswhite said. “There is so much student housing in the area, and we would love to be the home bar for the community, like Cheers. You come in, and the bartender knows your name.”

Capitol Corner Bar is set to open on Wednesday, October 7, and will be open Wednesday to Saturday, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Crosswhite told BoiseDev that a grand opening celebration is also planned for early 2027.
